I’m 50. How often should I get a health checkup

Health checks are medical examinations which are scheduled from time to time to ensure that one is healthy and fit. One should opt to go for regular health check-ups often. This will help diagnose any health problems at an early stage so that they can be nipped in the bud.

As one ascends into their 50s, it becomes highly important to schedule and go for preventive health checks. One should ensure to go for a regular health checkup which should include eye check-up, measurement of blood pressure and glucose as well as cholesterol levels, dental check-up, cancer check, weight check and assessment and Pap smear test.

As one hits their 50s, they should opt for a general health checkup every year or within the gap of 6 months if they are at a risk of developing any health conditions, or suffer from certain medical problems.

Here are some other tests and checks that should be done when you hit 50-

  • Breast check/ mammogram- A breast check should be done by all women who have turned 50. It can be done at any time, and one should generally feel for any lumps in the breast. A mammogram may also be arranged by the GP during a general health check-up.
  • Bone density test- it is generally done if a GP advices so. The scan basically assess bone density of the body, to determine conditions like osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a type of bone disease which makes them brittle and weak. Women over the age of 50 are generally asked to get a bone density tests done as they are more susceptible to osteoporosis.
  • Faecal occult blood tests (FOBT) – This test should be done once in 2 years and more frequently as per the doctor’s recommendation. This is because statistics show that the risk of bowel cancer tends to become greater after one reaches their 30s.
  • Ear and hearing assessment- if one has symptoms of loss of hearing at age 50 and above, he should get it checked. This is because complete loss of hearing can greatly affect the quality of one’s life. If a problem resulting in loss of hearing is detected early, it can be effective treated and cured. Audiologists conduct a number of different hearing tests to determine the extent of deafness one has faced.

To continue living a healthy and active lifestyle even at 50, above general health check-ups as well and preventive health checkups are very necessary.
